About Huasca de Ocampo

Huascazayola means in Nahuatl “Lugar de Alegría” (place of joy), but in all the country is better known as Huasca de Ocampo. It is the first place which received the nomination of “Pueblo Magico” (magic town) by the Tourism Bureau of Mexico, because its appearance and daily living way, what moves the tourists to a journey across the past, is a real cultural heritage.

The municipality keeps the characteristic taste of the Mexican province. It is hard to explain its charm, it could be the houses with gateways and uniform roofs, in old style customs; the surroundings, where beauty lakes and forests encircle the town; the pavestone streets, which take you to the handcrafts market, one of the most complete of the country, or where to taste the chinicuiles or the escamoles, typical dishes of Hidalgo.

The mentioned De Regla Count built marvelous haciendas (ranches) which still take the breath of the visitors; but the one considered as the mother of all the Haciendas, for being the first one, is the San Juan Hueyapan Hacienda, built by a Hernan Cortes’s nephew. It still has talaveras, stables and a chapel. Other interesting ex haciendas to visit are the San Miguel Regla and the Santa Maria Regla haciendas.

San Miguel Regla is a nearer communal land with an impressive visual attractive: the Peñas del Aire (Rocks of the Air). To get there is needed to take a dirt road where eventually there is a spot where a rock appears to be suspended in the air, and a precipice beside it, which it seams to be endless. For sure an ideal spot to practice extreme sports or just to delight your eyes with the view. It is worthy to take a deep breath of the clear air of the forest. Inside of the communal land there is a dam where trout can be fished.

Finally, Huasca has an international fame spot: The Prismas Basalticos (Basaltic Prisms), discovered by Humboldt in 1803. It are big giant columns adorning a precipice, where the waters of the San Antonio dam shape four water falls over the columns.

With out a doubt, a spot to be visited.
